After the rain delays of the last few days, the weather has been kind and the salt has been (slowly) drying out.
As a result the SCTA have allowed us onto the salt.
For both Ian, Bruce’s engine builder buddy Rich and the other motorcycle riders (Andy and Steve) this was their first opportunity to really savour the awesome sight of the Bonneville Salt Flats.
We’d love to show you a picture right now but phone cameras really don’t capture the majesty of the scene.
The surface was not as dry as we had hoped and for the first part of the journey, the route was under a fair amount of water.
Once we arrived at the salt we found our pit area and got to setting up. This included staking down a tarpaulin and getting the all important gazebo’s up for a bit of shade.
Once we were set up, Ian G took the opportunity to get some arty shots on his Triumph that we helped build.
Whilst this was going on Ian and Andy set to the Jensen,
We have a very heavy duty belly pan under the car, which requires some major engineering to fit. As such we waited until we were on the salt to attempt the fitting.
The work invloved is very heavy and strenuous and in this case included a lot of laying in wet salt puddles.
However, it all went together as expected, thanks to Harry’s input before we left and the work was completed with the minimum amount of swearing.
At this point we came unstuck as the bag of bolts to mount the side skirts was not where it should have been!!!!
After a search, we ended up asking one of the bend in the road gang offered to go into town and pick up some 6mm bolts.
What could possibly go wrong?
Three shops and an hour and a half later he returned with every 6mm bolt in Wendover. Apparently 1/4″ would have been a lot easier!
Upon his return the side skirts and our new fancy hub caps were fitted and we headed off to tech inspection.
Unfortunately, by the time we got to tech inspection it was getting a little late and we only managed half an inspection.
We will continue tomorrow.
The good point about the day was how much the water had cleared throughout the day. On the strength of todays ‘drying’ we are hopeful for some good runs later in the week.
