As we were too far along with our plans for the holiday side of our trip to Bonneville Ian, Janine, Harry and Penny flew out to Utah to enjoy the racing at Bonneville in 2022.
With great expectations we all made our way Wendover (the nearest town to Bonneville) where we were joined by our American friends Bruce and his mechanic buddy Rich.
To finish our party Dave (Janine’s father) also joined us soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the racing.
Ian and Janine arrived at the salt on Friday and immediately made their way onto the salt.
They very quickly met up with fellow racer Geoff Stilwell and Paul Parenica. Both teams looked ready to go, they had both passed tech inspection and done some major modifications to their already fast machines.
However over Friday evening it started to rain. At first it didn’t seem too serious as the rain was not exactly what they called torrential. However the salt flats are surrounded by mountains and all of the run off goes straight onto the flats.
The start of racing was delayed from Saturday and they all sat around waiting for the rain to stop and news as to when the event could get going.
Saturday night ended with the worst and most torrential rain storm the area had seen for years.
For only the sixth time in it’s history the SCTA took the decision to cancel the event.
We were all so dissapointed to see all of the effort that the teams and the organisers put in go to waste.
Did we dodge a bullet by not being able to get our car out for this years event?
Maybe there was some divine influence and this year was just not meant to be for us.
Our hearts go out to everyone who had got to Bonneville as there must be a lot of very frustrated and dissapointed drivers and teams out to there.
