It’s Lights Out and Away We Go!

Ian Northeast 11 March, 2023

After what feels like an awfully long time and a huge amount of very hard work we are finally, packed and on our way to America!

When we returned from our, once in a lifetime, never to be repeated trip to Bonneville in 2018 we planned to return in 2020. Our unfinished business needed settling.

Obviously both 2020 and 2021 were out of the question, thanks to the pandemic.

Last year, we pulled out all the stops to get the car there for speed week. Alas the state of the global shipping network prevented us getting there on time, so the decision was made to delay another year.

Finally we are ready to go for this year!

After 2018 we also extended an invitation to anyone else that wanted to join us, with a view to sharing the experience this year.

Luckily three people decided to take us up on the idea and we now have some very keen motorcyclists joining us.

Firstly there is Ian G, who you were introduced to in our last message. He is riding the fuel injected Triumph that we helped create for him.

Secondly there is Andy B, he is a bit of a mad speed freak and is taking his Kawasaki ZX10 to experience top speed on the salt.

Thirdly there is Andy’s brother Steve. He is planning on competing on another Triumph 650. This time an original Thruxton with some period go faster goodies.

Neither Andy or Steve are convinced of the wisdom of taking a 1960’s Triumph all the way to America, hence the Kawasaki as a back up bike, if the Triumph proves unreliable.

As a team that relies more on luck than engineering prowess we can see the wisdom in this idea.

We have been exceptionally lucky to find an incredibly helpful and professional team at Trans Global. The people there are really helpful, despite being given some real headaches by our constant plan changing and lack of shipping knowledge thay have walked us through every step.

In particular the delightful Roza has been gone above and beyond. She has stopped us making some huge mistakes and suggested alternatives to every problem we created.

We certainly wouldn’t have got this far without her.

As it stands the vehicles left us this week and are being delivered to Felixstowe by the equally as helpful James from James Robinson Transport.

Hopefully the ship will be leaving in the next couple for weeks for it’s 54 day sail to Oakland. California.

The below picture seems particularly apt!

Racing is not about how fast you get from the start line to the chequered flag. It's about the amazing people you meet, the fantastic places you go and the wonderful things you learn on the way.
