Bonneville 4 Our penultimate report

Ian Northeast 8 August, 2025

Things were looking good in motorcycle land once again. With the Triumph now perofrming properly it was time for the engine mapping to be sorted once and for all, now that we had some data.

Bruce, Mike and Rich set to retuning the bike late into the night.

The plan was to get the bike sorted so Ian N, Ian G and Andy could get a few early morning runs on the bike whilst, Bruce, Rich and Mike got to trying to fathom the mystery of the car’s poor performance.

Things were going really well and every run Ian managed on the bike was a little faster that the runs before.

This culminated with a superb run of 99.137 mph

We decided that with a bit of detailed mapping we could get the elusive one mile an hour.

Fortunately/unfortuantely the land speed gods were looking down on Ian for his next run.

The start was a little disjointed and as he left the line, the starter noticed a bolt lying on the floor. Just past the mile marker the battery on Ian’s bike as it has done many times before, decided to expire and stop th engine, so slightly peeved Ian pulled to a gentle halt, at the half way point of his run.

When we inspected the bike however we were all shocked to see that the only brake disc on the bike had sheared away from the wheel!

This alas has meant the end to Ian G’s campaign for this year, so close to the 100 mph he dearly wanted.

Whilst this drama was taking place the American magicians had found and proved what turned out to be a faulty ignition module on the Jensen. Replacement was impossible but with a bit of luck the unit itself was repairable.

It was now getting a bit late in the day, so we lined Ian up for a test run

181.419 mph in the last mile. A little down on last year but very much on target.

Tomorrow is the laast day of racing and is only a half day at that.

Our plan is to get up bright and early and get a run in the car before the temperature gets too high.

Keep your fingers crossed for us.

Racing is not about how fast you get from the start line to the chequered flag. It's about the amazing people you meet, the fantastic places you go and the wonderful things you learn on the way.
